Tumut Blues Rugby League Club
No accurate date can be given for the start of the Rugby League in Tumut, However, that game was gaining in popularity since its introduction to Sydney in 1908. No Official local record could trace to league until 1920…
From 1921 – 1971 the Maher Cup was the most famous trophy in New South Wales country Rugby League. Coaches and players were important to try and win the Old Tin Pot, as it was after accurately known, and the locals grew ten feet tall when selected in the Cup months.
The Cup was “born” in Tumut and finalised in the town if it’s origin in 1971.
The Maher Cup was to Rugby League what the Melbourne Cup was to racing. It’s focus gained on and off the field was instrumental in laying the foundation of the high standard set and continued in Group 9.
The Cup could well be related to the Seven Deadly Sins.
Pride, Covetousness, Lust, Anger, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth.
